Scenarios for multi-sector agricultural transition in the Walloon Region

Development of a prospective tool to draw up scenarios for multi-sector agricultural transitions, taking into account the diversity of production systems, agricultural regions and the effect of crop successions.

Presentation

This project, commissioned by SPW ARNE – Department of Environment and Water (DEE), aims to provide the Walloon Region with a multi-sector prospective tool to facilitate reflection on the future of the Walloon agricultural sector and potential transition paths.

The project is based on a number of methodological principles:

  • A field-based approach: identification of the main cropping successions in Wallonia
    production methods and links with commodity chains;
    culturales en Wallonie, des modes de production et des liens avec les filières ;
  • A multi-indicator approach: pesticides as an entry point, studied through the intermediary impact and quantitative indicators.
  • A prospective approach: development of different scenarios and assessment of their impacts.
  • A participatory approach: involving stakeholders in the process and in scenario design scenarios.
  •

The project is a continuation of work already carried out by Sytra on the agronomic quality of cropping successions in the Famenne, Ardenne and Jurassic regions, as well as studies on the future of Wallonia’s agricultural sectors up to 2050.
