FOODCoST – Costing and Internalisation of Externalities for Food System Transition

Ressources from Sytra

Presentation

From June 2022 to May 2026, the Sytra team contributed to the FOODCoST project, in collaboration with a consortium of 23 organisations led by Wageningen Research.

The project aimed to support the transition towards more sustainable food systems by developing a harmonised methodology to assess and value externalities across the food value chain. These externalities include impacts on climate, biodiversity, the environment, social conditions, and human health.

Beyond methodological development, FOODCoST also explored the barriers that hinder the adoption of more sustainable practices, at both business and policy levels. This work contributed to identifying key lock-ins in current food systems and to formulating actionable recommendations to support the internalisation of externalities.

Below is a selection of resources produced by Sytra within the project:

  • Presentation at the final event
  • Report on lock-in to the internalization of externalities in Food Sytems
  • Scientific publication in Food Policy: A Critical Review of EU Agri-food Policy Impacts
  • Recommendations for business models (published soon)
