Scenarios for the future of the livestock sector in Belgium
What is the current situation of the livestock sector? To which extent is there a diversity of production systems? What would be the consequences of different scenarios for the development of the sector in terms of production, consumption and environmental impacts?

This study aimed to open a public debate on the environmental consequences of current farming practices and food consumption patterns in Belgium, and on existing alternative production systems.
The study is based on a prospective approach. It provides a description of the five main livestock systems and characteristics of the livestock sector. Several scenarios for the development of the livestock sector by 2050 are then described and their consequences in terms of environmental impacts are assessed.
